Charming Applique Faces with Judy Phillips

Are you a fabricholic, collecting fabric with no idea what you are going to do with those gorgeous pieces? Do you agonize over throwing away small scraps (“But they’re so pretty!”)? Do you secretly yearn to spend a day relaxing and playing with fabric without having to think about the outside world, matching points, accurate cutting, or even sewing a straight seam? If so, this is the class for you!

In this class you will design and put together a raw edge appliqué face that you can use for a wall hanging, pillow, etc. They are slightly wonky, fun to create, and make great gifts! The finished size of the project will be around the size of a fat quarter (18”x22). Participants will learn to make a pattern and experiment with glues and fusibles to create a charming, one-of-a-kind fabric face. This is a design-only class; no sewing machine needed. Best of all no drawing skills are necessary! Judy will demonstrate how to finish your piece at home with basic sewing skills.

Supply List

Note: there is a $7.00 kit fee payable to the teacher at the day of the class

1- A Pencil

2- Sharp, comfortable scissors for applique. I use Karen Kay Buckley's Perfect 6" fabric scissors. I would not go any smaller than 6" and larger is fine.

3- Background Fabrics. Several (4 or 5) fat quarters or 1/2 yard fabric cuts to audition as your background fabric. My recommendation is to bring "dissimilar fabric- e.g. a bright and a neutral. I find simple backgrounds that read more monotone work best or have a small print. Please consider sharing an extra fat quarter or two with the group so we have more choices as a group!

4- Lots of Scraps! (At least a gallon bag stuffed with scraps). This really is the best part, search through your scraps and stash for novelty fabrics or prints that could work as hair and accessories! Wavy and straight lined graphic prints work well for hair (you'll need about an 1/8 yard for hair). The Crazier the novelty fabric, the better! Scraps as small as 3"x3" work just fine for lips, eyes, and eyebrows.

5- Fabric to use for the face and neck- a piece 8"x15" will work. It can be flesh toned, Grunge, solid, or a fun color!

6- Optional- small iron and travel ironing mat. The SWD classroom will have two ironing stations, if you don't want to bring your own.
