Applique this graceful Baltimore album style vase drawn directly from the 1848 applique quilt featured in Barbara’s book, Baltimore Garden Quilt. Start as a beginner, or raise your applique skills to a new level.

Choose to make the 15” vase block (Class 1), or a 40” wall quilt with double swag borders (Optional Class 2). Learn to applique with freezer paper on top as a guide for needleturn, and achieve accurate placement of pieces without marking the background.

Analyze complex applique to determine what comes first, next, last, and why. Get ideas for organizing your applique. Barbara will share her methods for choosing fabrics that blend well together. Experiment with color shading and blending, fussy cutting, and broderie perse.

Choose from several ways to make stems and place them in graceful curves. Sew your leaves with sharp, pointy points, or softly pointed as you wish. Try Barbara’s unique method to tame leaf points so they turn easily and securely. Simplify sewing complex flowers with Barbara’s layering technique.

Master smooth inner and outer curves. Learn ways to reduce bulk and prevent fray. Manage applique pieces which must go over and under. Discover clever methods for handling small pieces such as tiny rosebuds, shortcuts to make hand applique faster, and tips to avoid wrinkles on applique blocks. Finish your block with a brim, base and handles. Try a bit of reverse applique. For a final touch, embellish flowers with French knots.

Barbara uses a video projection system so everyone can see closeups.
